GIUSEPPINA RADICE | FOURFOURTIME | TEMPOQUATTROQUARTI | 2012

I like living in and with time and investigating it. I love the contemporary world that I have been allowed to experience in a good way (through advanced technology) and in a bad way (through advanced technology).

We are immersed in it, we experience it suffering from it or enjoying it and we look for answers among the endless immersions, we experience it suffering from it or enjoying it and we look for answers among the contradictions that qualify the meaning of life. In every time. For this reason it cannot be judged. It is experiences.

Dance your life, to the rhythm of passing time … sings Angelo Branduardi.

Giuseppe Livio seeks his rhythm. Personal, exterior/interior, independent of the favour of a public or a market to wink at to get its consensus. And I do too.

The idea of thinking about time/rhythm as movement regulating every action of ours, which we often don’t pay attention to - I like it.

The rhythm develops through life. It is life.

Today chronobiology devotes itself to study of the rhythms of life: I wonder what the rhythm of our contemporary world is. The news of the last few months immediately makes me think of the binary syncopated rhythm of ragtime, not so much for the marvellous notes of Scott Joplin that unforgettably still resound in our ears, but rather for the meaning of the term: torn time, tattered time. But as an unshakable optimist opposed to an indiscriminate and generic sense of unease, I try to identify, in the spiritual, mental and artistic restlessness, in the contradictions and in the excesses – always new and unexpected – a four-four time. It is a symbol of time and I imagine it as the soundtrack of that desperate need for normalcy, as an ethic that also appears on the surface in unexpected spheres and in which we meet and recognize one another.

The role as a historian that I claim for myself, which allows me a horizontal gaze, essential for acquiring and recording data, makes me continually meet people-individuals-artists that still in 2012 cultivate a sort of systematic obstructionism, well devised intellectualistically, a lifestyle and culture of their own, through which to face up to the world and themselves, and which they concretize in innumerable realizations. In our time there also survives the idea of growth through and with thought seeking form. Of any type. Culture in life is not an obsolete concept, and in art it manifests itself either with a renewed desire for painting or with the search for autonomous attention to objects.

Giuseppe Livio, regardless of Giuseppe Livio’s problems, regardless of the problems of the non-place produced by hypermodernity, seeks his place, his island over which a beneficent and lenitive puff blows. For me it is natural to devote to him some verses by Elsa Morante: “That, which you believed to be a small point on the land, / was everything./ And this treasure will never be stolen./ From your jealous sleeping eyes./ Your first love will never be violated.”

Having created and enriched in his numerous trips personal cultural baggage continually compared and discussed, in my opinion he cultivates loneliness as his internal skeleton; this allows him on one side to keep to himself and on the other to expose himself in a more receptive way; on one side to safeguard himself, almost protecting his privacy, and on the other to reflect so as to translate and produce, expressing it and therefore exposing it, his emotional experience in relation to the world. His natural predisposition to expressionist painting has only apparently been sweetened.

If at first his cry – of anguish, of denunciation, of anger, of disconcertment – was addressed to the time of the world, it now seems, even though damped, addressed to his private time. On his island sought and found he can breathe in a different air that I don’t hesitate to define archaic, judging from the silent and attenuated atmosphere of his most recent works. The women of the portraits that for their terseness I would define metaphysical and poetic evokers of ancient and mysterious magic are not painfully deformed and don’t even show sharp and strongly opposed colours. But even when the artist seems to want to insert them in reassuring real landscapes through the clear suggestion of daily particulars they mainly remain internal images. Problematic ones. Disturbing ones.

And the always concise and rather hard sign doesn’t indulge in any embellishment but indeed serves to work out bare painting even without a subject. […]

Four-four time is a symbol of time, it was said. In it the difference between a strong part and a weak part is much less accentuated in comparison to the strong opposition between the rhythms – regular / obsessive / varied / syncopated – (also pleasant to listen to) of ragtime compositions. Four-four time produces a very natural rhythm, simple, regular but rich in variations: not slow, not banal, not monotonous or flat, therefore, but not even torn and tattered. In accord with cosmic rhythms. Performance of it, as has been shown, induces reassuring feelings (not apathy and mistrust) in most of those who listen to it.

Or experience it.
